Cat and mouse automata toy: MYP Design / STEM

This automata tells the story of a cat trying to catch a mouse, and was built by four MYP 5 students working collaboratively; each student assigned to a different part of the automata. The gears were made from 60mm diameter, 10mm thick plywood and the gear teeth are made from 5 x 20mm roller bearing pins press-fit into 4.9mm holes in the wood. The drive shaft was originally 8mm threaded rod, but this was later modified to an 8mm stainless steel shaft. The two drive shafts are mounted in 'pillow block' bearings or held in 8mm phosphobronze collars. The pusher rods are also 8mm stainless steel shafts mounted in linear bearings with the plastic dust collars removed to reduce friction, allowing the rods to fall more easily. The original mouse model was carved out of stone but this has since been lost so the mouse shown was made out of modelling clay.
