It is crucial to have a proper drain for a flat roof. If the drain was messed up by other roofers, then the second best thing to do is to install a retrofit drain. A retrofit drain does narrow the diameter of the drainpipe because it is another pipe sliding into another. We usually don't use the rubber fitting that comes with the drain because it narrows the drainpipe even further. The danger of doing that is if the drain would ever backup, then water would spill into the building.
