Point Loma Kelp Beds, San Diego, SCUBA Diving 60 Feet Deep

On Saturday March 23rd I met up with my buddy Jon in San Diego. We did not have much time, so the plan was to buzz out to the Point Loma Kelp Beds, find a spot, go to the bottom, come back, and go in. When we got into the SD Channel, there was some decent wind coming from the South. Luckily there was not much swell to speak of, despite it looking OK for surfers on the beach. Figuring there would be a fair amount of surge in shallow, we looked out at the 60 foot line, since I don't like to scuba much deeper than that. We found a nice rocky area, with some relief, and kelp. Sort of shooting blind, since I have never dove here before. It ended up being an awesome spot. The vis was excellent at 40ft + and it had a blue color instead of a green color. Lots of fish here, and many were good sized. The invertebrate life was out of control. Lots of big urchins, lobsters, and multiple species of abalone. Fish seen: Sheephead, kelp bass, sand bass, kelp rockfish, olive rockfish, gopher rockfish, opaleye, blacksmith, garibaldi, pile perch, black perch, lingcod, yellowfin fringehead, painted greenling, and probably others I am forgetting.
