My Ford Excursion was having bad fuel economy and lack of power when it was cold. It made this sucking sound until the engine was completely up to temperature. I did research online to figure out what the problem was. This video is of troubleshooting the problem from a cold start, the repair of the line and testing after the repair was completed. This is a fairly quick repair if you have all the tools that I show in the video. The day I did this repair, it was 32 degrees all day. I froze my butt off. Since finishing the video I've run a whole tank of fuel through the Excursion and I am getting much better fuel mileage. Here's a short explanation of what it does: The EBP system works like this: With cold temps, the PCM increases the idle speed and tells the EBPV (EBP valve) to close to put a little load on the engine and increase the exhaust temp to warm/bring the engine up to operating temp faster. The sensor is there to tell the PCM when the exhaust pressure it asked for has been reached (this is called feedback control), so the PCM can ease the valve open and maintain that pressure. Once the engine oil temp reaches a certain value, indicating that the engine is fully warmed up, the PCM opens the EBPV. Because The MAP sensor measures pressure between the compressor wheel of the turbo and the intake of the engine, and the EBP measures pressure between the exhaust of the engine and the turbine wheel (exhaust side) of the turbo. The MAP sensor and EBP sensor are measuring two different parameters, each loosely related to the fuel delivery and engine load. When EBPS is not sensing the EBP properly because of a clogged EBP line or a clogged/ faulty EBP sensor, your fuel mileage will suffer and performance will too. I am fairly certain that if this line hasn't been cleaned in 100k miles it's clogged hindering fuel mileage and performance. I recommend inspecting and cleaning every 25k miles. My EBP line clogged my engine had to be at normal operating temperature for the EBP valve to open. With the EBPS line clean and sensor working properly my EBPV opens around 100 or so degrees, the performance was noticeably better and I gained about 3 mpg. I hope this video helps fix your problem.
