"Maggie's Reel" (Al Petteway) | Dustin Furlow | Urlacher Concert (Redwood/Walnut)

Thinking of Al Petteway a lot, lately. A lot of his fans discovered him by way of Dream Guitars' demo videos but many probably didn't know he was also a Grammy-winning composer and worked for National Geographic as well. I feel fortunate to have met him a year ago, as he unfortunately passed as I was beginning my training at Dream Guitars. Since relocating to Asheville to work there full-time I find myself in the same seat he used to record in every week, not surprisingly there is a tangible energy in front of those microphones, still. I've been happy to oblige requests to play his tunes from time to time and this is one I've been enjoying for awhile now. I remember a lesson with Al where he talked about how important it was to just get lost and have fun while composing or arranging songs. I feel like every one of his tunes I’ve learned over the years have been just that—fun. A lot of fingerstyle guitar music is strenuous in nature, but most of Al’s tunes are either a zen study of beautiful, brooding chord flavors or a collection of playful movements cleverly arranged with great melodies layered overtop. This is a favorite of mine called “Maggie’s Reel”, played on quite frankly one of the nicest sounding and feeling guitars I’ve ever owned - a Concert model made by Rebecca Urlacher in Bend, Oregon. “Sublime” is the right word—this song and the guitar feel great together.
