Pro Tips: Eliminating Clipper Lines in Dog Grooming Clipper Blades

The blade drive is one of the parts in clippers that should be replaced most frequently, as it wears down faster than you might think. Different brands and models of blade drives wear at different rates, and the amount of use your clipper gets also greatly impacts the wear time. Manufacturers usually recommend that professional groomers change their blade drive every 1-3 months, depending on usage. Why Clipper Blades Leave Lines in Your Cut One common reason clipper blades leave lines, or track marks, in the cut is a worn blade drive. A worn blade drive can cause reduced blade performance and leave visible lines in the dog's coat, indicating uneven cutting. This doesn't mean your blades are dull; the issue lies with the clipper itself. However, these problems can also be caused by other factors: Impacted Fur: Fur blocking the blade drive can prevent it from making the full side-to-side motion, causing uneven cuts. Tension Issues: Incorrect blade tension can lead to track marks. Poor Sharpening: A poorly sharpened blade, even if recently sharpened, can cause uneven cuts. To determine if the blade drive is the issue, you can test the blade on another set of clippers if you have a spare. This helps identify whether the problem lies with the blade or the clipper itself. Regardless, it's a good idea to thoroughly clean the blade, blade drive, and blade latch, and test the blade again before deciding to replace the blade drive. Another way to check if your blade drive needs replacing is by examining the part itself. On a worn blade drive or turning lever, you'll notice that the edges become rounded instead of square. For an Andis blade drive, you’ll see excess movement when pressing the plastic sides together. Hi, my name is Nick George with Clouds Diamond Sharpening.
