This was the lead single from their breakout-album "Dookie" released in 1994. I've always admired the minimal, stripped-down instrumentation these bands were known for. They achieved a huge, impactful sound with such few ingredients. In this video, I break down this iconic bass riff from Mike Dirnt, whose parts are essentially the lead melodic figures in the song. I discuss his tone, the debate on what bass he used (it seems that Mike has said conflicting facts over the years about this), a demonstration on achieving his tone, how the bass part subtly evolves throughout the song, tips on "swinging" a walking bass line, and much more. This bass part could easily be converted to a jazz song, and I really dig the stylistic duality showcased here. I think these colorful elements are what really propelled Green Day much further than their peers at the time.
