Hired a mechanic to explain how the engine works. Fuel system explained in detail. Explains the fuel injection pump and injectors. How to start the engine with low battery by using the decompression lever. First you hold down the decompression lever, you then have a second person start the engine and as soon as the engine turns (engine will make a weird sound) you can releas the decompression lever and the engine should start. Glow plugs explained. You always need to hold the glow plugs switch up for 5 to 10 seconds before the you start the engine. This is done to warm up the injection system. Switch is found in the control panel in the cockpit. Fuel Filters - primary Racor (located between the fuel tank and the low pressure feed pump) and secondary (found after the low pressure feed pump). Racor does all of the work. Make sure to maintain the Racor filter clean by replacing it periodically. After the fuel passes the secondary fuel filter it goes to the high pressure injection pump which pushes fuel at a very high pressure to the injectors. No air should get through the high pressure injection pump. Any air in the line must be bled prior to it hitting the pump. If there is any air that gets thru the pump will be unable to supply the line with enough pressure to run the engine. Liquids don't compress but air does. Air acts as a cushion if caught in the line past the high pressure pump. Without enough pressure the injector won't open. There is a check valve past the high pressure pump that does not allow fuel to return back to the pump. There is a little more fuel pushed through to the injectors that does not get used. This excess fuel serves two purposes: it lubricates and cools the injectors. The excess then returns back to the fuel tank. How to bleed the engine. Why it is a good idea to install a hand pump to prime the fuel line and where to install it. Explains that there is no timing adjustment to the engine. It is set at the factory.
