Beijing X55 SCOOP 1st SA Test

https://motormatters.co.za/ https://www.changecars.co.za/ A major scoop for ‪@MotorMatters‬ as we were handed the keys for the VERY 1st full test of the X55, even before the official launch in SA. BAIC have now been around in SA for a few years, so the brand is not totally unknown. From this perspective calling the new car Beijing by BAIC will help instead of it appearing to be a new, and totally unknown, brand in SA. It's great fun driving a car that is totally unknown, it was noticed wherever we parked the car with a constant stream of people stopping to look and asking "what is it" if I was nearby. I took note of the fact that every comment re the looks was very positive. After the highly impressive media preview drive a week ago, we took the top spec Level 3 model for a full test period to try and experience just some of the plethora of features that have been included on the new models. Especially on the top of the range Level 3 model. All models are powered by a 1.5L 4 cylinder turbopetrol motor delivering 130kW and 305Nm to the front wheels via a 7 speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The engine has won awards in China and the gearbox was named as one of the world's top 10 in 2022. On the road both prove themselves with the smoothness and delivery in everyday driving. Beijing, or BAIC, have certainly loaded this car with every possible feature. Delving into the menus on the touchscreen, there are some shortcuts available through steering wheel buttons as well, allows you to set up every possible function. From drive modes like Eco, Comfort, sport and smart......and sport not only changes your instrumentation to a shade of red but also adds a rorty roar to the engine sound. The unusual centre console with 2 levels, USB as well as numerous places for storing your phone plus a cooling function in the bin under the armrest. The electronic parking brake will not disengage without the driver's seatbelt being fastened, an excellent safety feature. Air-con functions are supplemented by front seat heating and cooling. Ambient lighting colour selection, follow-me home lights that can be set to any time delay you choose. Even something like the 3 flashes for lane changing can be set to 5 or 7 flashes if you want. This list could keep going on. The front seats, decked in 2 tone red and black leather are a stand-out feature. Besides electric adjustment the sports shape provides exceptional comfort and grip. Then take a look at the legroom and headroom in the rear seats, plus these passengers also get air-con vents and an additional USB. The enormous panoramic sunroof can be set to close automatically when speed reaches 125km/h to prevent too much buffeting. The roof and windows have detectors that will close all that are open if raindrops are detected by the car. On the road for our traditional Sunday roadtrip, the X55 is smooth and vert comfortable when cruising. There is plenty in reserve for overtaking when needed and the transmission instantly drops a cog to provide safety. The car feels solid and planted on the open road as well as around town. If I HAVE to find a "picky point" then I'll note that I found that the headlights could provide brighter lighting at night, especially on the roads during load shedding when it's much darker than usual. In summary, the Beijing X55 has surprised in every respect. The test car is still brand new, arriving with only 600km on the clock. As is now expected from Chinese brands, it's the value for money proposition that stands out even above the endless features included at the price. At the preview we were told that pricing would be around R400 000 to R460 000 as tested. I've had a little whisper that it may even be a tiny bit lower. Watch this space. #baic #beijing #beijingauto #beijingX55 #X55
