Life as a Translator: Interview with Suzanne Stephens

Wondering what life as a translator is like? At The Translator's Studio, we've done a series of interviews with established translators and translators who are just starting out. Their stories will help you figure out your path towards life as a translator. In this video, Gwenydd Jones interviews Suzanne Stephens, a Spanish-to-English translator with over 30 years' experience working in academia and the arts, and a member of The Translator's Studio alumni. Suzanne talks about her life as a translator and how becoming a translator was a vocation for her from an early age. She tells Gwenydd about moving to Mexico and working as an English teacher before transitioning to translation after having children. She discusses her initial experience working in house for translation agencies and then moving across to freelancing, figuring out her specialisations, the perils of biting of more than you can chew and the importance of networking and quality translations as ways to ensure ongoing work. -- LINKS -- ► The Professional Translation Conversion Course (pre-DipTrans), the first of our courses that Suzanne did: https://translatorstudio.co.uk/conver... ► The Advanced Translation Course with DipTrans Preparation, the second of our courses that Suzanne did: https://translatorstudio.co.uk/spanis... ► Suzanne's LinkedIn profile:   / suzanne-stephens-0001b79   ► Article on the history of machine translation: https://translatorstudio.co.uk/machin... ► DipTrans Essential Guide 2022: https://translatorstudio.co.uk/about-... ► MA in Translation Studies and DipTrans — A Perplexed Translator's Guide: https://translatorstudio.co.uk/guide-... -- ~ Get your FREE level test: https://translatorstudio.co.uk/free-l... ~ ~ Get our newsletter: https://translatorstudio.co.uk/newsle... ~ Timestamps: 00:00 Interview introduction 01:20 How Suzanne became a professional translator 03:00 Moving to Mexico after studying languages at university 03:15 Teaching English in Mexico before transitioning to translation after having children 03:56 Becoming a full-time translator working in-house for translation agencies before transitioning to freelancing 04:56 Life as a translator working with early computers 05:45 Translation feedback process and lack of feedback 07:26 Developing translation specialisations based on what you enjoy 08:20 Building up a translation client base by networking 08:42 A day in the life of a working translator 10:10 A bad experience related to Suzanne's work that's made her a better translator 12:22 Allowing extra time in your schedule to avoid overload 13:40 Suzanne's response to the concerns of up-and-coming translators regarding the amount of work available and machine translation 14:15 Importance of translation quality to ensure a consistent workload 14:38 Networking to find translation work 15:13 Machine translation (a "threat" since the 1990s and long before) 17:05 Machine translation as a tool that can assist the human brain 17:59 Suzanne's message for up-and-coming translators 18:32 Interview conclusion ********** -- Related Content -- Foundation Translation Course (Pre-DipTrans):    • Foundation Translation Course (CertTr...   Advanced Translation Course with DipTrans preparation:    • DipTrans Course: CIOL DipTrans Exam P...   DipTrans Resitter and Translation CPD Packs:    • Translation Practice: DipTrans Resitt...   #TranslatorTraining #TranslatorCertification #TranslationCourses #TranslationClasses #Diptrans #Translators #Translation #TheTranslatorsStudio #Interviews
