New York Spearfishing August 22+23, 2024. Instagram fatigue. This summer I photographed very interesting assignments. Gppd photos I have not yet shared. The incessant flow of images, the news cycle between presidential elections, protests, wars, bombing of children. Little gets done, what's the relevance have all these visual stories? A few hours in the ocean, leaving all those thoughts behind, exposed to a different natural world feels like an antidote to all of this. If I open Instagram I see many people vacationing at the Balearic islands (is it the new "in" destination?), the endless flow of faces screaming their anger in political protests. Although without the massive Palestine protests I doubt that Kamala would be a presidential candidate. Still IG can get tiresome, the vertical format, the low resolution, the videos without timestamps, no horizontal videos full screen On the 22nd the ocean water looked so flat as I was driving on a bridge. Igor @garrik_brklnspearhead wanted to go spearfishing, but he was doubting my assessment that the water was good. In August with algae bloom and several storms the visibility can be the worst. The water was great. No boats, no strong current, clear. But all I could see were blackfish and stripers. I was looking for sheepsheads, porgies, bluefish. I like their meat better, they are more challenging, and do not have such a tight legal size slot. So i swam a bit out. I saw another striped bass, right in front of me. It seemed good size and took a shot. It was way too easy. the fish jumped out of the water, it pulled hard on the line. The shaft went through the gill plates and exited, and it was already bleeding, but it was no stone shot. The next day the conditions were much worse. Lots of plankton. sediment in the water and the south wind going against the low tide. I only saw blackfish. A bullnose ray swam towards me and made a U turn. It was such a rare, precious encounter. No fish, but I got a memorable footage and experience.
