Old Man Saltbush is being developed as a series of hedges to provide shade and wind protection within The Long Yard Food Crop Garden. These hedges are 4 metres apart - 20 metres long - aligned North South. These saltbush hedges provide ideal growing conditions for a range of vegetable crops. They also provide reflected light. Planting of hedges commenced June 2019 - so this video is designed to show you the evolution and benefits of this particular configuration of hedges - TO FAST TRACK the SHADE EFFECT we have planted Sweet Corn on the same alignment. Saltbush hedges are easy to prune - they provide mulch - and create deep stores of root mass that in turn provides for enhanced moisture penetration and moisture holding capacity.
