Amien Rais said the M-P-R, the 700-seat top constitutional body consisting of 500 members of the House of Representatives plus 200 leaders from outside the political arena, will vote on Wednesday to choose Megawati's successor as vice president. He said Megawati had no preference for any particular candidate. The front-runners are expected to include Hamzah Haz, chairman of the United Development Party, and Akbar Tanjung, speaker of the House of Representatives and leader of the Golkar Party that supported strongman Suharto during 32 years in power. Others mentioned for the post include Agum Gumelar, coordinating minister for political, social and security affairs, and his predecessors in that job, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Wiranto, along with former Justice Minister, Yusril Ihza Mahendra. Just a short time after stripping Wahid of the presidency for incompetence, the assembly unanimously voted on Monday to elevate Megawati to fill the remainder of Wahid's term into 2004. Wahid has so far refused to recognise the assembly, its vote or Megawati's presidency and remains inside the Meredeka presidential palace, refusing to vacate the titular seat of power. Rais said on Tuesday the former president can stay in the palace for one or two more weeks but will then be removed if he fails to leave. Wahid declared a state of emergency shortly after midnight on Sunday in a bid to preserve his presidency, but the assembly, police and military all refused to recognise the decree, leading to his ouster by the M-P-R on Monday. Rais said an earlier Wahid decree delegating some presidential duties to the vice president, designed to assist Wahid several months ago, would be altered now that Megawati has taken over. The decree was issued amid rising demands for power sharing between Wahid and Megawati due to his poor performance in leading the country.
