A lumbar spine slip disc, often referred to as a herniated or slipped disc, occurs when the inner gel-like core of an intervertebral disc (the nucleus pulposus) pushes through a tear or weak spot in the outer layer (the annulus fibrosus). This can press on nearby nerves, leading to pain, numbness, or weakness in the lower back or legs. Symptoms of a Lumbar Spine Slip Disc: Lower Back Pain: This can range from mild to severe. Sciatica: Pain that radiates down the leg, typically following the path of the sciatic nerve. Numbness or Tingling: Often felt in the lower back, buttocks, or legs. Weakness: In severe cases, it might cause muscle weakness in the legs. Difficulty with Mobility: Pain might worsen with movement or certain positions. Diagnosing a Lumbar Spine Slip Disc: Medical History and Physical Examination: Your doctor will review your symptoms and medical history. They’ll perform a physical exam to check for pain, range of motion, and neurological deficits. Imaging Tests: X-rays: These can rule out other causes of back pain but are not very effective for diagnosing disc herniation directly. Myelogram: This is an X-ray or CT scan with a contrast dye injected into the spinal canal to better visualize the spinal cord and nerve roots.
