diy Tail Vise

This is a home made Tail Vise that I designed for my work bench. Materials are in-expensive and the project can easily be undertaken by most woodworking enthusiasts. The holding power of this vise is tremendous and especially suited for small workpieces. The vise opens up to 8 inches. In combination with the bench dogs, the vise can hold long workpieces that are up to the length of the workbench. I used a 3/8 inch threaded rod as the spindle screw. The drawback to this design is the slow speed when switching from wide to smaller opening. I use a cordless drill to speed up this operation. Other than that, this vise is robust and of high utility. It was a lot of fun making it and more so using it. On the issue of the nut shaft, the 1/2" round shaft is a bit hard to drill and tap. On retrospect, I would just use a 1/2" square stock which would make drilling and tapping a lot easier. On the end stop, I used aluminum because it wont cause damage to my plane iron if I was to accidentally hit it. I am still experimenting on putting another stop nearer the front of the vise body. The reason being the proximity of the stair railing to that end of the workbench. I have not yet encountered a situation where the railing became a problem when I'm planing. I hope my viewers enjoy this video.
