Is 8GB of VRAM Enough for PC VR?

It's currently October 2023 and both AMD and Nvidia have recently released what are supposed to be mid-tier graphics cards with only 8GB of VRAM on them! Namely the RX 7600 and the RTX 4060ti 8GB. Many games nowadays are beginning to recommend 12 or even 16GB of VRAM which begs the question, what were AMD and Nvidia thinking when designing these cards? They argue 8GB is still plenty of VRAM for most games, especially if you're playing at lower resolutions like 1080p (aka full HD). Well, when playing games in VR we are often playing at resolutions much higher than 1920 x 1080 and even higher than 4K (3840 x 2160) and for those that know anything about how computer graphics work, the higher you set the render resolution of your games the more VRAM is required to store textures, character and other object models as well as other game assets. Since we're playing at much higher resolutions in VR and more VRAM is needed the higher your render resolution is, this of course begs the question, Is 8GB of VRAM enough to play PCVR? Well that's what we aim to find out in this video. To explore this question I ended up testing 4 different GPU's; the Radeon RX 7600 8GB, the Radeon RX 7900XTX 24GB, the GeForce RTX 4060ti 8GB and the GeForce RTX 4060ti 16GB. While comparing the RX 7600 and 7900XTX didn't help me figure out whether or not 8GB of VRAM was liming the performance of the RX 7600, it did help me figure out which games I own will utilize more than 8GB of VRAM. I was then able to play all the same games with the both the RTX 4060ti 8GB and the RTX 4060ti 16GB and I was surprised by what I found out.
