Major Mukund Varadarajan was an officer in the Indian Army, remembered for his bravery and ultimate sacrifice for the country. Born on April 12, 1983, in Tamil Nadu, he joined the Indian Army and was commissioned into the 22nd Battalion of the Rajput Regiment. He was deployed in counter-insurgency operations in Jammu and Kashmir, where he demonstrated exceptional courage and leadership. In 2014, Major Varadarajan was leading a team of soldiers in an operation to neutralize terrorists in the Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir. During this encounter, he and his team managed to eliminate three terrorists. However, Major Varadarajan was critically injured in the exchange of gunfire and, despite his injuries, continued fighting until the mission was accomplished. He ultimately succumbed to his injuries on April 25, 2014. In recognition of his bravery and dedication, Major Mukund Varadarajan was posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra, India's highest peacetime military decoration.
