It has an altitude of 115 metres and is located in the port area of the city. It is widely considered to be the first favela community in Brazil. In 1897, victorious veterans of the Canudos War who were promised land in the old capital upon their return found that such promises were not kept. In frustration and desperation, the soldiers invaded the hill scrub land close to the (then) Ministry of War. The hill was initially named Morro da Favela after the favela plant which is indigenous to the region where the soldiers fought against the Canudos settlers in the eastern province of Bahia. In the early 20th century, freed African slaves joined the soldiers and were joined by new European migrants as well, because it was the only affordable place to live in near their work in the city's centre and port. To this day, Providência lacks a proper municipal water supply and the residents rely on a network of pipes that illegally siphon off some of the city’s water. Only a few of the 5,000 or so families who live in the area are connected to a sewage system. *When planning to visit a favela in Brazil please use extreme caution. I do edit out all of the gang related activity that I witness. Guns and drugs are visible in all favelas and it’s not the perfect place to visit if you’re an inexperienced traveller or with your family. I am concerned that I am making these videos look like a walk in the park, when they can be very dangerous without the right guide or on the wrong day. Thank you for watching!
