Hike the Continental Dive Trail: Chama to Chama

Hike the CDT with me! Say what?!?! Hike Chama to Chama, that makes no sense! I tried to play it cool in the videos, but having to turn around was quite heartbreaking. I was really looking forward to the San Juan’s and the snow. Many of my favorite memories from the PCT are from going into the high Sierra early and negotiating the snow. However, my knee wasn’t having it. The constant post-holing and slight knee hyper extension that comes with it was too much. In October 2023, I was kicked by a calf just below my knee causing it to bend in the wrong direction. I thought I broke my tib-fib at first as I felt my leg go in and back. No popping noises though which was good. The entire leg swelled up and I could put zero weight on it for roughly 2 weeks and wasn’t able to walk normally for about 2 months. So, I knew coming into this hike that my knee may not be able to hold up. It felt great until this day. Like I say in the video, the pain wasn’t horrible but we were getting ready to go into more intense snowy/icy terrain and I didn’t want to put myself or my friends in a dangerous position or have them have to alter their hike to help me or need SAR services. So I decided to hike back out and decide how to move forward. Luckily there is a low route, the Great Divide Alternate, in this section and it had a lot less snow.
