Sarnath (Hindi। हिंदी)। सारनाथ (जहाँ बौद्ध धर्म की शुरुआत हुई)। "The place where Buddhism Started"

Sarnath is one of the Four Greatest Places of Buddhist Pilgrimage. Lumbini, Bodhgaya and Kushinagar being the rest of the three greatest places of pilgrimage. Sarnath is the place where Buddhism started !! And it is the place where Buddha set the Dhamma rolling!! This is the place where Buddha preached his first sermon called Dhammacakkapavattana Sutta. In Sarnath, Buddha gave the theory of the Four Noble Truths and the eightfold noble paths, which leads to freedom and enlightenment. Sarnath is located around 10 kilometres from the ancient city of Varanasi and is one of the most important centres of pilgrimage for Buddhists. After attaining enlightenment at Uruvela, Budhha was undecided about teaching Dhamma to others, but on inspiration from Brahma, he set out to teach the five ascetics who have served him for six years but left him after he abandoned the path of self-mortification. Budhha reached the Deer park on a full moon night of Asadha month, and that very night he gave his first sermon. The second sermon given by Buddha is called Anattalakkhana Sutta. In Sarnath Buddha also preached one of the richest men of his time, named Yash and his 54 followers and they all became Arahants. Later Buddha asked all these 60 Arahants to go in different directions with no two Arahants going on the same road, thus establishing the order of monks or Sangha. Emperor Ashoka visited this place in 249 BC and erected several important monuments to mark this pilgrimage, including Dhamek Stupa, Dharmarajika Stupa and Ashoka Pillar with the lion capital atop. This capital is now India’s national symbol. The monastic settlement of Sarnath was destroyed by the end of the 12th century during the Turkish invasion. During the next few centuries, it was gradually deserted and erased from the memory of people. It remained lost till 1836 when British archaeologist rediscovered the site. After remaining lost and deserted for more than 800 years, today, Sarnath has gradually become one of the most visited places in India and one of the most important centres of Buddhist pilgrimage in the world. #Sarnath #Buddhism #Buddha
