Smokejumpers Prepositioned in Palmer suit up and load up for a fire jump - June 5, 2022

A load of Alaska and Boise Smokejumpers were prepositioned at the Palmer Airport due to the lightning activity in the Mat-Su Valley. Like coiled springs ready for action, they were called upon to assist the McGrath Helitack Module on the Rungun Creek Fire (#186) in the McGrath Area. In the video, a smokejumper airplane (Casa 212) with eight smokejumpers is temporarily positioned at the Palmer Airport. They can be seen suiting up and then loading up into the Casa, which then takes off en route to a wildfire. These men and women will then parachute into remote, inaccessible areas to put out fires and/or protect cabins and Native Allotments. In anticipation of lightning, the Alaska Division of Forestry prepositions additional resources in areas that are forecasted to receive lightning. These resources increase the number of available firefighters that are poised to respond to any new fire start.
