Exclusive: India’s Safest Cars in 2024: Tata Harrier & Safari Earn Global NCAP's Safer Choice Award.

In a significant win for car safety, Tata Motors has once again raised the bar with the 2024 Global NCAP Safer Choice Award for their flagship models, the Harrier and Safari. This prestigious accolade recognises Tata's dedication to vehicle safety beyond just crash tests, marking a significant milestone for Indian automakers. The Harrier and Safari made headlines in October 2023 by securing a 5-star safety rating from Global NCAP. Now, with the Safer Choice Award, Tata takes it further by incorporating advanced safety features like Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Speed Assistance, and Blind Spot Detection. These features focus on crash avoidance technology, a critical need on India's unpredictable roads. In the interview, Mohan Savarkar of Tata Motors emphasises that safety is a multidimensional concept – what happens before, during, and after a crash matters. Tata is working hard to integrate ADAS-based features, ensuring their vehicles meet and exceed global safety standards. Global NCAP’s Safest Cars for India program has been a game-changer, by not only influencing vehicle safety standards but also shifting consumer attitudes. Indian automakers like Tata and Mahindra have led the charge, with Mahindra previously bagging the Safer Choice Award for the XUV 300 and XUV 700. David Ward, President of Towards Zero Foundation, highlights the importance of crash avoidance technology, stating that it's better to prevent crashes than to survive them. He praises the rise in consumer demand for safety, which is now creating a competitive landscape among automakers. However, while manufacturers like Tata, Mahindra, Volkswagen, Skoda, and Hyundai are making significant strides, other global automakers are still lagging. Saul Billingsley from the FIA Foundation urges international brands to respect Indian consumers' demand for quality and safety and follow the lead of Indian carmakers.
