Judy Garland's Difficult Early Years | Biographical Documentary

In sharp contrast to her cheerful and wholesome image, Judy Garland’s real life was far from perfect. The girl next door innocence of her early movies brightened the dark days of the 1930s and a string of feel good Hollywood musicals in the 1940s left everybody happy as they hummed along. Yet, behind the radiant smile and unforgettable voice was a woman tortured by insecurity who constantly had to beg for affection from her mother and fight to stay afloat on the stormy waters of the Hollywood dream machine. In this documentary about the life of Judy Garland, I explore how she struggled with the pressures piled on by her ambitious mother and a studio system interested only in box office takings… and, of course, how she ultimately lost her battle at the age of just 47. In this first part, I outline her early years of performing from the age of two with her sisters, her Hollywood break and her early films and first marriage. Part Two will be released soon. Finding Out More I found Gerald Clarke’s biography, Get Happy to be a very readable account of her life, but it does tend to focus on sensationalising a life that didn’t need much sensationalising. I also used Anne Edwards’ Judy Garland and Gerold Frank’s old but very thorough Judy and some of the memoirs of people who knew her.
