Fatal Fury 1 (alt) [Arcade] - play as Hwa Jai

This is a playthrough using Hwa Jai in the Arcade version of Fatal Fury 1. Read on below for more information... Hwa Jai is the 5th enemy boss of the game. He is an unplayable character in this version of it. This is an alternative version of the Arcade game, where the boss characters are specially made playable. ===== ABOUT FF1 HWA JAI ===== He is a former Muay Thai champion who was defeated by Joe Higashi. Seeking revenge, he was convinced that his own fighting style should become more violent and brutal in order to defeat Higashi. This led to the martial arts world shunning him. He eventually became one of Geese Howard's henchmen. A 2D fighting game would not be complete if it didn't have a head-swap character. In Fatal Fury 1, Hwa Jai has the honour of being a head-swap of Joe Higashi. There are some differences though of course. In FF1, he has a unique gameplay trait where he "powers" himself up by consuming a "power drink" (thrown to him by one of Geese's henchmen in the background) when he loses around 30% of life. When he is in his "power drink" mode (which makes him appear as if he's drunk), has gains the Rocket Kick special move as well as having some different standing basics. ===== BUGS & GLITCHES ===== As he is originally a non-playable character, there are a number of interesting factors to note when a human player controls him, as follows: ---- There are various glitches that can occur. Some of these faults are the result of Hwa Jai not being programmed to fight against and interact with the other bosses. ---- When under human control, he cannot block. This makes him weak to use against the harder CPU opponents. The CPU Hwa Jai can block though of course. ---- The CPU Hwa Jai can perform a "dodge" move where he leans back slightly. The human controlled Hwa Jai can also do this by holding Down and pressing [K]. It looks to be more of a glitch/bug move though. ---- His Throw Button, when it successfully grabs a boss/enemy character, is glitched in that the opponent falls the other way. It works as normal against Joe, Terry and Andy of course. ---- When he is thrown by an enemy/boss character, he falls the wrong way and the wrong animation frames are used. ---- His colour palette is "wrong" for the first 4 matches against the first set of enemy opponents (Meyer, Max, Duck and Tung). After that, his colour palette is correct for the remaining matches against the second set of bosses. Ironically, the skin colour for his "wrong" colour palette actually looks correct. ---- His wrong colour palettes looks to be Duck King's colours. ---- When he is in the wrong colour palette and he consumes the power drink, his "powered up" colour is actually correct. ---- When fighting against Duck King, if he powers up (consuming the drink), his "drunk" colour pallette will also be applied to Duck King for some reason. ---- When his opponent is on an opposite plane to him, he has wrong animations for most of his actions. This is because Hwa Jai is not meant to operate with specialist plane movements and attacks. ===== TRIVIA ===== ---- As a proper character, he has only appeared in two SNK fighting games - Fatal Fury 1 and King of Fighters XIII. ---- He became a playable character for the first time in the SNES version of Fatal Fury 1. ---- His "power drink" is a mixture of medicinal herbs. The KOFXIII development team has said that it does not contain alcohol or cola... ===== ABOUT FATAL FURY 1 ===== This is where SNK started their bid for their take on the fighting game genre. Fatal Fury 1 was a somewhat decent approach, but it was always going to be up against Capcom's Street Fighter II, which was released in the same year (1991). Perhaps the most "unique" aspect of the game is the fact that the characters can fight on two planes - the background and foreground, with the foreground being the standard view. I imagine this must've been a graphical achievement at the time. The game also marks the debut of Terry, Andy and Joe, before going on to become staples of the SNK fighting game world. The same also applies to some of the enemy/boss characters, such as Geese Howard and Billy Kane, who go on to appear in future SNK fighting games... with the former even appearing in Tekken 7. It should also be noted that the game's subtitle is The King of Fighters... this subtitle would later become the name of it's own fighting game series. The Fatal Fury storyline is loosely connected to the King of Fighters storyline, as the Fatal Fury Team's ending in KOF94 shows.
