During a trip to Chicago, ElevatorInfo connected with Nate Hefner, a U.S. Veteran working in the elevator industry. After earning a degree in Architecture, Nate hadn’t planned on becoming an elevator constructor. But when a close friend and fellow Veteran introduced him to the elevator trade, he was immediately drawn to the work. Now a mechanic working in new construction for TK Elevator and a member of the International Union of Elevator Constructors (IUEC) Local 2 , Nate highlighted for us some of his favorite parts of his career as a union elevator constructor – beginning with the opportunity to work with his hands and build something from nothing. Throughout our conversation, Nate stressed how important it was for elevator constructors to have a solid educational foundation from the day they enter the trade throughout their career. Being prepared to face challenging tasks and safely navigate hazards on the job are part of their day-to-day work. “You have to pay attention to what you’re learning because it applies to the real world,” he said. It’s knowledge and high-quality training that keeps elevator constructors safe on the job, and it’s the critical foundation gained through the USDOL-Registered Apprenticeship through the National Elevator Industry Educational Program (NEIEP) – the most comprehensive education and training program in the industry - that gives them the tools they need to do their jobs efficiently and effectively.
