As Zhou Dunyi, a Neo-Confucianist in the Northern Song Dynasty, said: "I only love the lotus that grows out of the mud without being stained, and washes in the clear water without being evil." The lotus is also a symbol of the core teachings of Buddhism, representing the process of pursuing spiritual purification, awakening and liberation. The lotus has the characteristics of "blooming and bearing fruit at the same time", and is regarded by Buddhist culture as being able to embody the past, present and future at the same time, with the implication of transcending time and space and reincarnation.
