1000's of Kesar & Alphonso ("Hapoos") - Indian Mango Mania in London at Kingsbury Fruit and Veg shop

✓ It's about that time of the year again, when we have to visit our favourite London Mango seller, namely "Kingsbury Fruit and Veg" in Kingsbury, London. We've been coming to these guys for many years now and we never cease to be amazed at the quality, quantity and price of the Mangos always on offer. The sublime Indian Alphonso Mango (A.K.A. Hapoos हापूस) is the king of of mangoes - it has a very short shelf life once it is ripe (so has to be exported whilst unripe). It is also one of the most expensive kinds of mango and is grown mainly in western India. Highly sought after is the variety of Alphonso from the Ratnagiri region of India. This variety of mango has a very short season of about three months from the beginning of April up to around the end of June; but is well worth seeking out due to the very, very sweet & almost fibreless nature of this fruit. Who needs oily Indian Street Food when you've got Mother Natures true gift. At the height of the season in London the price can be around £6.00 to £10.00 per dozen (depending on the size & availability). & around 400 - 500 rupees per 10kg (approx 35 pieces) in India. (Some mangoes will start appearing before the full season starts but can be prohibitively expensive i.e. £20.00+ per dozen in London & around 600+ rupees per dozen in India). Prices suggested are averages. Kingsbury Fruit & Veg is located at 477 to 481 Kingsbury Road, London, NW9 9EA If you have any questions you can call them on: 020 8905 0295 NEW.........NEWS UPDATE: As of 20th January 2015 the ban on the Alphonso Mango has now been lifted.......Thank God !!! NEW.........NEWS UPDATE: 21st May 2015; at the height of the mango season, the prices in London were very high; this was due to unseasonal heavy rainfall damaging mango crops in India (prices paid at Kingsbury Fruit & Veg grocery shop were £14.00 for a dozen size box or 2 boxes for £25.00) OLD..........NEWS UPDATE: British Asians are rushing to buy the last 'King' mangoes because the EU (European Union) has imposed a ban on mangoes from India. The "temporary ban" which came into force on 1st May 2014 will remain effective until December 2015 after authorities in Brussels found consignments infested with fruit flies which they fear could damage European salad crops. The ban has caused a dramatic drop in prices in India, making Alphonso Mangos (usually too expensive for the average Indian) actually affordable. "A box of four dozen Alphonso mangoes, which cost around Rs5,000 (£50.00) just a few days ago, can now be had for as little as Rs1,000, (£10.00) (The main video recorded on Wednesday 17th May 2017 - but also used a few photos + video from our archives). We really can't wait for the 2018 season to start. Music used for the photos slideshow is Royalty Free Music. "Dhaka" by Kevin MacLeod.
