Why we use the fermi function f(E) and how I like to interpret it, in terms of the percentage of occupied states at a given energy. The fermi function is one of the most important functions in all of semiconductor physics, and understanding what it means and how to use it is critical to understanding all semiconductor devices. This is part of my series on semiconductor physics (often called Electronics 1 at university). This is based on the book Semiconductor Physics and Devices by Donald Neamen, as well as the EECS 170A/174 courses taught at UC Irvine.
