The SR-VD400u Pro HD capable reading VCR cost a sixth of the cost of the SR-VDA300u Mastering recorder. This machine would reside in the homes of motion picture industry producers and critics. Dailies and film screeners were transfered onto the elusive HD Pro 25Mbps 2:2:2 chroma space onto easy to find $11 D-VHS videotapes. I show the brochures that were distributed back in 2004 for this playback VCR along with its manual. The picture quality of this machine when reading analog VHS and S-VHS is top of the line and is a step above the JVC 8,000 and 9,000 series S-VHS machines for many reasons. This machine has a refined TBS time base corrector with a perfected video calibration system. It allows both VHS and S-VHS videotape recordings to be output via Firewire 400 (ieee 1392.) The Dynamic Drum system uses a larger dedicated motor which is less prone to failure compared to consumer S-VHS and D-VHS machines. This was great news for the professional VHS digitization industry. The audio soundtrack on analog VHS and S-VHS videotapes can be output via the optical audio out. I personally love the option to down-convert D-VHS videos to 480i in 4:3 aspect ratio and output them via the nostalgic RCA composite and S-Video outputs. I also love the option to record D-VHS recordings from analog SD composite and S-Video sources. This is an insanely feature rich and versatile VCR.
