Training Tip Tuesday! When your horse won't go straight.

Training Tip Tuesday! When your horse won't go straight. Every colt that is started will be this way. Some horses who are highly challenged, even after being trained, will be this way. They will have the tendency to veer off the straight line you set them on, especially when feeling magnetized towards home or other horses or the barn, etc. Barn and buddy sour horses will have the tendency to lean towards their "magnet" and create all kinds of difficulty during riding. In today's training tip, I discuss 3 different ways to help your horse go straight. It is important you allow your horse to make a mistake. Don't try to hold him in position. Put him there and when he decides to veer off, make that difficult for him. Here is the short version of the 3 ways: 1. Use the outside rein (the side your horse is moving away from) to guide/direct him back to the line you want him to move along. Today I'm moving along a canal bank. Use your inside leg (the side your horse is moving towards) to squeeze and even bump his girth area while you are guiding with the opposite rein. 2. If your horse is a hard leaner and won't commit to a straight line for any amount of time, sometimes it's helpful to use the outside rein to stop and turn your horse 180 degrees in the other direction, basically creating a roll back. Continue doing this until your horse begins anticipating the turn instead of trying to push towards his "magnet". 3. If you've taught your horse to move his shoulders inside and outside a circle or on and off a straight line, you can tip his nose towards the direction he wants to go and ask him to move his shoulders in the opposite direction until he straightens up. This repositions his shoulder from leaning towards his magnet to bending away from his magnet. When I'm out on the trail, these are 3 of maybe 5 or 6 different techniques I'll use to help my horse learn to go straight and not wander or push towards his magnet. It's a challenging issue to deal with, but you can do it! Be consistent and patient!
