Module 1- L5: Air Pollutants – National Ambient Air Quality Standards The basic idea behind proposing ambient air standards is to set quantitative limits on the permissible amount of specific air pollutants that may be released from specific sources over specific timeframes. It sets - guideline to identify air pollutants; guideline to measure, determine & express the pollutants in desired units; time weighted average of identified pollutant to maintain desired concentration in residential, industrial & rural area and ecologically sensitive area. It also limits on pollutants with reference to ambient atmospheric quality of air sometimes barring for some of the sources. The challenge of communicating air quality with the common people in a comprehensible manner has two dimensions: translate the complex scientific and medical information into simple and precise knowledge & communicate the citizens an impact of pollutants in the historical, current and futuristic sense. Thus developing an efficient and comprehensible AQI scale is required for citizens and policy makers to make decisions to prevent and minimize air pollution exposure and ailments induced from the exposure.
