Taking the Train to the 2019 Ogden Train Show - Exploring the old Salt Lake and Ogden Shops

We are off the the Hostlers Ogden Train Show 2019! We almost made it too. First there was an accident on the train. BUT mostly we were messing around at the old Rio Grande Salt Lake City shops. And then looking at the cool old stuff at the Utah Railroad Museum and old facilities in Ogden. BUT soon we made it to the Train Show! Which is next weeks show. Because you can only fit so much in a 50 pound bag. The Rio Grande's Salt Lake City locomotive shops were quite impressive. AND mostly still there! The Utah Transit Authority took it over years ago and use the old location of the original Rio Grande Western depot as their "Transit Hub". The location where the light rail, Greyhound Bus, Amtrak and the interurban, the Front Runner, all converge. The building they use is the old Denver and Rio Grande Western freight depot. AND the part of the old roundhouse is still standing, as is the huge back shop and turn of the century depot. The roundhouse and back shop has been allowed to deteriorate, but will now be restored and use as the UTA transit bus shops. On to Ogden where the turn of the century Union Station is now used as the Utah Railroad Museum. Many fun things to see and some amazing rich history to look at. Three roundhouses!! (none survive) In the 1940s and 50's Ogden was one of Americas largest rail hubs. And then with the loss of the original railroads.... gone.. And they on to the TRAIN SHOW... which is next weeks show. Oops. You can only do so much messing around before you run out of time.
