In a horrific incident on September 23rd, Maharashtra’s Thane Police shot dead Akshay Shinde who was accused of sexually assaulting two minor girls at a local school in Badlapur town. As per the Thane Police, Akshay snatched the gun from cops and opened fire at them. The police in retaliation fired at him in self-defence. In 2023, India saw 32,000 rape cases being registered as per National Crime Records Bureau with a significant increase in cases in 2024. Only about 30% of rape cases result in conviction. The highest number of rape cases have been reported from Uttar Pradesh, Delhi and Maharashtra. Are the killing of rapists in encounters a failure of India's justice delivery mechanism?
