This will be the fourth visit of a Pontiff to Malta. Saint John Paul II visited twice (in 1990 and 2001) and Pope Benedict XVI visited in 2010, on the occasion of the 1,950th anniversary of the shipwreck of St. Paul. Pope Francis visit theme ~ The 2 - 3 April 2022 ''They showed us unusual kindness'' (Act 28-2) St. Paul was shipwrecked on the Island of Malta back in 60 AD when Paul was being taken to Rome to be tried as a political rebel, but the ship carrying him and some 274 others was caught in a violent storm only to be wrecked two weeks later on the Maltese coast.
