Jaranan or Jaran Kepang Temanggungan is a hereditary art that lives and develops as a dance that expresses life among ordinary people or outside the palace. It is estimated that this art has existed since the 1930s in Temanggung. In the past, in Mergowati Village, Kedu District, Temanggung Regency, there was a place for raising selected horses from the Islamic Mataram Kingdom as written in the Serat Centhini which was published in 1814. From there the idea emerged for the community to create dance movements inspired by the movements of horses . To clarify the movement of the horse, they made an imitation of a horse which was originally made from makeshift materials, such as banana fronds, cowhide, until what we see now is woven bamboo painted and decorated like a horse. In 1972, an inventory of the movements of the jaran kepang dance was carried out by the Regional Cultural Inspection Officer of the Temanggung Regency and then a standard for the jaran kepang dance was prepared which was considered as typical of Temanggung. This is where the Idakeb dance emerged, a variety of jaranan dance, the original version of Temanggung. Idakeb stands for Regional Cultural Inspection. Thousands of residents in Temanggung who had practiced were then given the opportunity to perform the Idakeb Dance at the opening ceremony of TMII in 1975. Jaranan depicts the spirit of heroism and military cavalry. The movements displayed are very dynamic, rhythmic and aggressive accompanied by gamelan and singing. Jaranan is often displayed at village clean events, state events, celebrations, circumcisions, and others. Therefore, Jaranan serves as a tool for sacred rituals, performances, and also entertainment.
