MEDIA VITA IN MORTE SUMUS - Gregorian Chant

This gregorian chant, "Media vita in morte sumus" was a favorite of St Thomas Aquinas. It's composition is sometimes attributed to Blessed Notker the Stammerer, a 9-10th century Benedictine monk of the abbey of St Gall in Switzerland, but this is sometimes disputed. The drones in this recording can perhaps be thought of as the groans of the poor souls of the Old Testament Fathers imprisoned in Abraham's Bosom waiting to be released by Christ's Harrowing of Hell, and of the Poor Souls in Purgatory, currently suffering until their debt is paid. Apparently, this song was also used by Catholic knights as a battle song until the Synod of Cologne, in 1316, declared that it should not be sung without the local bishop's authority on account of various superstitions arising. 3. Gloria Patri, et Filio, et Spiritui Sancto. English Translation: In the midst of life we are in death: From whom shall we seek help, but from Thee, O Lord, Who for our sins art justly angered? Holy God! Holy Mighty One! Holy Merciful Saviour, Deliver us not into bitter death. 1. In Thee our Fathers have hoped; they have hoped and Thou didst deliver them. 2. To Thee our Fathers have cried; they have cried, and they were not confounded. 3. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.
