Let's explore Dillard Mill. We'll watch this 1904 water powered grist mill operate. Grinding corn.

Nestled on the banks of Huzzah creek in Crawford County is a Missouri State Park, The original mill was built in1853 and was known as the Wisdom Mill Named after its builder, Francis Wisdom. The first mill was destroyed by fire in 1895. The current mill was built and operated by the Mische family in 1904 (1904-1908).The mill closed in 1956. In 1975 the property was sold and the mill renamed the Dillard Mill when the State of Missouri took over the care of the property. The property was dedicated as a historical site in 1977, and the restoration was completed in 1980. We will join a tour of the mill and will take a closer look at all of the equipment inside of Dillard Mill and watch the mill in operation. We will also talk about the history of the mill and the struggles of constructing a mill back in the day. We will also talk about the process of how flour is made and how they used mills to grind corn. I will discuss the various types of propulsion used in these old mills, we'll talk about an overshot water wheel, a undershot water wheel, a pitchback water wheel and the turbine. These mills were the original "green" energy manufacturing plants. There is so much history associated with these old grist mills and each one has it's own story to tell.
