This City Rules the Indian Stock Market Trades! Guess the Name?

There are many unique things about Maharashtra’s capital Mumbai, earlier known as Bombay. It is also called the economic capital of India. Also, it is the land of Bollywood, the film industry of India. But Mumbai is also the stock trading capital of India. There is no official recognition for this but is a fact which can be ascertained by the fact that Mumbai contributes almost 68% in daily turnover in the cash segment. Ahmedabad is second to this with an 11% turnover. But how Mumbai became so prominent in stock trading while other cities are lingering in trading. To find out the answer we have to travel to Bombay of colonial times. So Bombay was a colony of fishers. Then in the 15th century, brits started to pour over India and they established posts for business in coastal towns like Madras, Bombay and Kolkata. This made it easy for them to export raw materials and import finished goods like clothes and machinery etc. So Gujratis started to migrate to Maharastra to set up businesses and expand their monopoly on already established trades. Initially, trading was done under a Banyan Tree at Dalal Street and cotton was traded instead of stocks. Then a young merchant Premchand Roychand Jain who was born in Surat but was bright up and educated in erstwhile Bombay shifted his attention from cotton trading to stock trading. Along with other merchants, he formed a group called The Native Share and Stock Brokers Association which later changed the Bombay Stock Exchange in 1875 and the rest is history.
