POWER BLINDS | The Word Exposed with Cardinal Tagle (October 20, 2024) Today is the Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time; in today’s gospel, Jesus tells James and John: “Can you drink the cup that I drink or be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized”? This is because the brothers have asked Jesus to give them the seats of authority and honor beside him, when he finally reigns. One at his right, and the other at his left. The Lord reveals: “For the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Friends, this conversation of Jesus with James and John and the rest of the disciples is an invitation for us to reflect on why we are following Jesus and why we serve in different capacities. Do we still remember our purpose and aim? It was very clear to Jesus. He came to become the servant of all to the point of sacrificing himself. Will we be willing to serve and suffer as Jesus did?
