On September 13, 2023 during the 54th Session of the Human Rights Council, the US together with a cross-regional group of 15 Member States and the World Jewish Congress hosted the side event: "Strengthening Global Efforts to Combat Antisemitism: A Human Rights Imperative." "Antisemitism, a menacing shadow that has persistently loomed over history, is once again on the rise, challenging our most sacred values and human rights principles," said Ambassador Michèle Taylor, U.S. Permanent Representative to the Human Rights Council, opening the event. Delivering one of two keynote statements, U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk said, "Every genocide begins with hate speech, and with attitudes that dehumanize others," and warned of the growing challenges of the digital age. Ambassador Deborah Lipstadt, Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Antisemitism emphasized the interconnectedness of all forms of hatred and discrimination. "One cannot fight hatred in silos," she said. Representing the World Jewish Congress, Leon Saltiel, urged diplomats and others in attendance to make the event "a rallying point to redouble our joint efforts to eradicate antisemitism and hatred around the world."
