Walking & Wild Camping. South Downs Way. Section 1

This is the first of a series of uploads documenting the South Downs Way long-distance route. In this video, I join ‪@TOM_OUTDOORS‬ as we start section 1 of this National Trials walk between the beautiful city of Winchester, then wild camp at Beacon Hill and finish the 12-mile hike at the village of Exton. The views really start to open up as you approach Beacon Hill, which unfortunately was where the rain started for us. It was touch and go as to whether we would be able to wild camp but we managed to find a spot that worked quite well in the end. I was in the Helm Compact 1 and Tom was in the Helm 1. We made some off-camera comparisons but agreed that both tents are very good and provide enough space. I was a little cold at night but that is because I swapped out my warmer Vango Nitestar 350 for the Berghaus Transition 200. The temperature dropped overnight and the rain was almost sleet. I need to get better at documenting the 'wild camp' so will do better next time. We had a really good time though and enjoyed some ciders, beers and even some mead that Tom had brought. I haven't laughed so much in a long time. Oh, and I need to sort my bag out as it was creaking! The next morning we packed up and finished our hike to the village of Exton. But the journey didn't stop there as we drove back to Winchester and visited The Hospital of St Cross and received the wayfarer's dole, which is a centuries-old tradition still happening today. The wayfarers dole is given upon request to any traveller and consist of a small measure of beer and some break - you ask for it at the Porters Lodge. We were also treated to a personal blessing from the Priest, Dominic. They made us feel very welcome and we would highlight recommend a detour from your route to partake in this. Thank you to Tom... had a great weekend.
