The gorge is named after Dr. Moritz Vogelgesang, a local doctor and head of the improvement club, who played a crucial role in making the gorge accessible. The name "Vogelgesang," which means "bird song," often leads to the gorge being mistakenly called "Bird Song Gorge." First made partially accessible to tourists in the summer of 1906, the gorge was devastated by floods in 1908. Between 1926 and 1927, the municipality of Spital am Pyhrn reconstructed the gorge with steps and footbridges. Today, visitors can traverse the gorge via approximately 500 steps. The steps are inspected and maintained every May to ensure visitor safety.
