06.1 Tight binding theory

In the lectures on the Drude and Sommerfeld model as well for the previous lectures of electrons in a (weak) periodic potential we used plane waves as a basis. States represented by plane waves are the eigenstates of the kinetic energy operator. The potential energy due to Coulomb energy is divergent on this basis. It is thus convenient to look for a different starting point to describe the physics. In this video we will explain why it is convenient to use local basis functions instead of plane waves.
