Everybody has seen them. The countless merchandise designs with cartoony depictions of Frida Kahlo. Museum gift shops are littered with them. But not many people recognize the implications which the sale of these designs have - inside and outside of the United States. In this talk, high school junior, Gabe Torres, explores the contradictory legacy of Frida Kahlo as one of the most commercialized painters in history despite having been an avid Marxist during her lifetime. In turn, Gabe also goes into the story of Día de los Muertos – celebrations both historic and modern – to understand the extent to which commercialization and hybridization affect Mexican communities in the US. Gabe Torres is a first-generation American of Mexican descent and recipient of the National Hispanic Recognition Award. A lifelong creative and sedulous academic, he seeks to pursue an education in architecture and urbanism after high school. He finds passion in bringing awareness to social issues which subvert the sphere of public discussion, and is best described by others as considerate, concentrated, and offputtingly caustic. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
