In this video, I’ve put the beard trimming on hold to let my beard grow out for a better demonstration on a future product review. That said, I’m switching things up and focusing on a product that I’m hoping many of you out in the GroomReviews community can share your experience and results. The Derma Roller. I was inspired to put this video together after a recent conversation with a friend who’s really struggling with his inability to grow a full beard. His facial hair is thin, he has a very patchy beard and it’s taking a toll on him. In addition, he’s taking beard growth supplements, but they’ve done nothing for him. He then asked me: Do you think I should use a Derma Roller? And my honest response was: What’s a Derma Roller? For many of you, you’ve known about microneedling and dermarolling for a while, but for me, this was off the radar. I’m not going to pretend like I’m an expert in dermarolling. Or, that I use the Derma Roller every day to grow a thicker beard or to keep my skin healthy. I honestly have not had a chance to test the Derma Roller more than a few times. That said, I feel we can all grow and learn from each other. To help everyone in the community struggling with a patchy beard or similar beard growth frustration, this is an opportunity for those with experience to share their honest results and make the community stronger. But, for those of you in the same boat as myself, let me explain what I’ve learned about the skincare technique of dermarolling, also known as microneedling. The Derma Roller is basically a rolling drum, lined with hundreds of tiny needles, attached to a handle that you roll across your skin. With dermarolling, these micro needles create tiny injury sites along the surface of the skin, prompting the body to kick into action to repair and heal. It does this with increased blood flow and circulation to the area, along with an increase in collagen (for strength) and elastin (for elasticity). Aside from hair regeneration, the derma roller is known for its skin rejuvenation benefits and overall improvement to skin health as a result of a dermarolling skincare routine. Now, some men claim using male pattern baldness solution Minoxidil in combination with a derma rolling regimen proves to deliver greater hair growth results. Not having used Minoxidil myself, I defer to the community to share their experience. However, I’ve read that Minoxidil should only be used after 24hrs have passed since dermarolling. (Please consult with a licensed professional before using to avoid any harmful side effects.) For hair regeneration and beard growth, experts recommend you stay within the 0.2mm and 0.5mm needle size range. At this size and smaller, the top layer of skin (epidermis) will still be penetrable to drive collagen, elastin and increased blood supply to the area. To avoid causing damage to your skin, use of a needle larger than 0.5mm is best for implementation in the care of a professional. Of note, there are several important things to remember when using the derma roller. These include, but aren't limited to the following: 1.) To prevent infection, sterilize the roller head in an alcohol solution before and after derma rolling. 2.) Wash your face with an antiseptic or antimicrobial cleanser to remove oil, dirt and impurities from your face or skin. 3.) Apply gentle pressure on your skin, ensuring not to puncture the skin and draw blood. 4.) Do not use the Derma Roller if you are currently having acne breakout. 5.) Do not use the Derma Roller on your lips, eyes, sore and open wounds. 6.) Do not use the Derma Roller if you are allergic to metal. 7.) Do not share your Derma Roller with other people. As far as rolling directions, you can use the derma roller horizontally, vertically and diagonally or in a combination of your choosing. This can be done anywhere from 5 to 10 time on each area of the beard, working your way around your face. For beginners, a derma rolling routine of once per week is best until evaluating how your skin reacts to the derma roller. Once comfortable, microneedling twice per week is best in order to give the injury sites sufficient time to heal.
