SYNOPSIS OF THE PLAY RANGEEN RUMAL Inspired by the Shakespearean tragedy ‘Othello’, Rangeen Rumal (The coloured hanky) is written by Sri Sanjoy Kar. The play is a product of artistry based on some historical events of Tripura. The play presents how the upper caste Aghore and his associate Rupendra conspire to defeat Atul, one from a low caste community as he was appointed the king’s chieftain and also for his marrying Debalina, the Dewan’s daughter. A war between Gobinda Manikya, the then king of Tripura and Suja Shah, the Bengal Subedar began in between during the year 1641. In the battle of plains of Tripura, Atul Chandra proves his valour and makes a mess to the Mughal army. His victory becomes the cause of others jealous. Aghore succeeds in stealing the coloured hanky given by Atul to Debalina, a sacred gift from his mother, at the time of their marriage. Aghore’s wife, Dalia stole the hanky dropped by Debalina unconsciously on the floor although Dalia did not know the purpose behind it. Aghore kept the hanky in Keshablal’s house, trapped him and excited Atul against Debalina misinterpreting the Keshablal- Debalina relations as an act of adultery. Deep love turns into intense hate. An impassionate Atul trusted Aghore, kills Debalina but gets the truth revealed by Dalia after Debalina’s death. Atul realizes that he becomes the victim of hatred, jealousy, caste discrimination, malice, cruelty and infidelity which ultimately provoked him to commit suicide. ……………………………………………………………………
