PNG Kumuls NEW coach Jason Demetriou

Former South Sydney Rabbitohs head coach Jason Demetriou has been appointed as the head coach of the Papua New Guinea (PNG) Kumuls, a move seen as a significant boost to the nation's ambitions of joining the National Rugby League (NRL). The appointment comes at a pivotal time as PNG intensifies its bid to secure an NRL franchise by 2028, with Demetriou’s extensive coaching experience expected to play a crucial role. Demetriou, who led the Rabbitohs to a preliminary final in 2022, brings a wealth of experience to his new role. He has coached 60 games with South Sydney, achieving 31 wins and a win percentage of just 51.7%. Despite parting ways with the Rabbitohs earlier this year, Demetriou’s track record includes key assistant coaching roles with the North Queensland Cowboys, St George Illawarra Dragons, and Brisbane Broncos. Notably, he was part of the Cowboys' coaching staff during their 2015 NRL Premiership victory. As head coach of the Kumuls, Demetriou will lead the national team in the upcoming Pacific Championships and guide their preparations for the 2026 Rugby League World Cup, where PNG is set to host several matches. His appointment has been applauded by PNG rugby league officials, who view it as a vital step toward securing an NRL license. PNG NRL Bid Chief Executive Andrew Hill stated that Demetriou’s involvement is a "positive step" in their quest to become part of the NRL, emphasizing the creation of pathways to develop the nation’s rugby league talent. Demetriou expressed his excitement about the opportunity, highlighting the passion and talent within the PNG squad. He noted the progress being made at the school and academy levels in PNG, which he sees as the foundation for future success. "It is a great time to be involved in the game in this country, and I’m excited about what lies ahead," Demetriou said. As the Kumuls prepare for their World Cup campaign, Demetriou’s leadership is expected to be instrumental in both their immediate success and the long-term goal of bringing an NRL team to Papua New Guinea.
