The urban layout of Montemar is due to the beginnings of the tourist boom in the mid-20th century, unlike other older neighborhoods in Torremolinos such as El Bajondillo, La Carihuela, and El Calvario. Considered as a residential neighborhood, Montemar is made up of villas and mansions with beautiful gardens built mainly during the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. The said villas and mansions represent a time of opulence and international fame of Torremolinos, as they housed cosmopolitan and sophisticated people, coming from all over the world. One of the first hotel establishments in the city, the Parador de Montemar, was located in this neighborhood, and it soon became the place of residence or summer vacation for various famous people. Montemar appears in several novels by writers such as Juan Goytisolo, Sánchez Dragó, James A. Michener, William Peter McGivern, and Antonio Pereira.
