Various of fire dragon performance STORYLINE: LEADIN: The streets of Hong Kong are filled with sparks and cheers as a fiery celebration that has been part of the community for over a century unfolds. Once a quiet neighbourhood, Tai Hang now attracts crowds for the annual Fire Dragon Dance, a tradition born from resilience during a 19th-century plague. STORYLINE: Hong Kong is holding a fiery celebration, that features dozens of people rushing around with thousands of incense sticks burning in a long dragon. It’s been an annual event for more than one hundred years, and its origin is a common one - remembering a recovery from a terrible disease. The neighbourhood where it takes place is special, an old, mostly low-rise area called Tai Hang, right next to one of Hong Kong’s busiest shopping districts. Just a couple of decades ago, Tai Hang was a sleepy little place full of car repair shops and great local food places. Now it’s gentrified, with much fancier restaurants, and even a shop selling skateboards, if you need them. But the old community remains, and the old tradition of the fire dragon dance stays strong. The origin of the ritual is a 19th century outbreak of a plague which residents tried to banish with this special Fire Dragon Dance. Pang Chi-keung, 67-year-old former resident of Tai hang is back for the three-day event. This is his annual ritual for his contribution to the district where his family lived for four generations. “I believe that fire dragon dancing is good for Hong Kong. I’m not promoting superstitious, but I believe that the fire dragon can drive away any plague. And it’s important that the event brings us together with positive energy for the village,” he says. Managers at popular pizza house Dough Bros think the event brings life to the village. Tai Hang Fire Dragon dance takes place on three consecutive nights from 16 to 18 September from 8pm local time. Customs include people admiring the full moon at night and eating moon cakes, a big pastry, to celebrate.
