There are a number of reasons why the 335-room Willard Hotel Intercontinental is possibly the most famous luxury hotel in Washington DC. The Willard is located just a few hundred feet from the White House. Everything is upscale, especially the grand lobby. There are big rooms, a spa and a restaurant that includes service, weather permitting, on a big outdoor patio. The Willard's history dates back to when it was built in 1816. In the years just before and during the Civil War, some of the most famous Americans who ever lived -- including Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses Grant -- walked its halls or stayed in its rooms. One well-known (but probably untrue) story claims that the words "lobbying" and "lobbyist" originated at the Willard. According to the story, President Grant used the term to describe the political advocates who often visited the hotel's lobby trying to buy influence from the president or members of his administration. The Willard is also famous because it's supposedly haunted by a variety of ghosts, including presidents, movie stars, poets, writers and even a world famous circus master. As for how much the Willard costs, I was surprised. We got a very nice, large room in the summer of 2021 for about $350. There are, of course, premium rooms and suites that come with a much heftier price tag. #willardhotel #willardhotelintercontinental #willardhotelrooms #willardhotelcivilwar #willardhotellobbyist Keywords Willard Hotel, Why is the Willard Hotel famous, How many rooms does the Willard Hotel have, How old is the Willard Hotel in DC, When was the Willard Hotel built, Where does lobbying come from, What does lobbyist mean in history, How is the Willard Hotel associated with the Civil War, Is the Willard Hotel haunted, How much does the Willard cost.
